The God Who Wasn’t There

by: Rev. Dan

I stumbled upon The God Who Wasn’t There, which I ordered and will review, once I’ve watched it. It’s a movie which explores these ideas:

  • The early founders of Christianity seem wholly unaware of the idea of a human Jesus
  • The Jesus of the Gospels bears a striking resemblance to other ancient heroes and the figureheads of pagan savior cults
  • Contemporary Christians are largely ignorant of the origins of their religion
  • Fundamentalism is as strong today as it ever has been, with an alarming 44% of Americans believing Jesus will return to earth in their lifetimes

The title has to be a counter to the Francis Schaeffer trilogy.

“Contemporary Christians are largely ignorant of the origins of their religion.” So true. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I was raised Catholic and was taught absolutely nothing about the processes involved in how what eventually became designated as “scripture” was composed.
