I can’t believe that I actually typed “I wish I had HBO” (I am a fairly devout non-television watcher) but it’s true. My friend Schmeeve has been telling me about an HBO special that was on this week called “Friends of God.” Thanks to the joy of YouTube, I’m now wishing I’d seen the entire special… oh, man, I wish I’d seen this one.

Here’s our buddy Ted Haggard, a year before the scandal, talking about “the Moral Plumb Line” and asking parishoners how often they have sex and what percentage of the time their wives climax… (honest, I’m not making this up):

Christians are very transparent… It’s all about brainwashing the children. Who cares about what the evil scientists think, it’s just their job to teach the lies of Satan, based on Iron-Age thinking and 2,000-year-old mythology.

“God said it, I believe it, that settles it.”

Any scientific evidence that isn’t based on Scripture is an obvious lie, and we all know that if you can’t summarize it in a pithy statement with a cliche rhyme or alliteration that it’s a lie from the deepest pit of Hell.

When you look at the Bible and you look at evidence, scientific evidence, it makes sense… it’s just easy to explain to your children… the Flood and the fossils that are found, and it just makes more sense to me. (emphasis added)

Just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, if it’s easy to explain to kids, and doesn’t require any of us to dishonor God by thinking, well, it must be true!

I really wish that I believed in the Rapture and that it would actually happen. A whole lot of deliberate and willful ignorance would disappear in one fell swoop. But enough wishful thinking…
