Left Behind Games: Leading the Way for Christianism

by: Rev. Dan

Anybody who suggests that Left Behind Games isn’t on the cutting edge of Contemporary Christianism obviously hasn’t been paying attention. They’re making a brilliant three-bullet-point attack on secular society and providing a truly Christ-like example:

  1. Make a mediocre game with an inherently flawed premise based on a line of books written with an inherently flawed premise which have been made into inherently flawed movies starring the inherently flawed former child sitcom actor Kirk Cameron.*
  2. Release your mediocre game into the marketplace and watch it get uber-high ratings (7-8 out of 10!) from Christian Xtreme Gamers and panned to hell by pretty much anybody who wouldn’t wear a Jesus Freak t-shirt non-ironically.
  3. Sue anybody/everybody who gave your mediocre game any attention on their blog for slander, although your marketing team frenetically attempts to post positive comments and press releases to every negative review they can find, often posing as blog readers instead of slimy scumbags marketers.

Astute commenters at the GamePolitics blog note:

> DoggeySpew: “The last thing to do trying to shut people up in the blogosphere is trying to sue them.”

sqlrob: I didn’t know there was an expansion pack, did you?

Suing bloggers in an attempt to gain free publicity… just like Jesus when he sued the Sanheddrin for libel. Nobody’d ever have heard of the Immaculate Kid from Galilee if it hadn’t been for Jesus making some substandard furniture and then suing the purchasers for libel for saying it was crap. Awesome! Just goes to show that 2,000 year-old-tactics are still relevant and meaningful in today’s society!

Zach Whalen at Gameology writes:

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ve probably seen that we’ve posted some rather critical remarks on the game Left Behind: Eternal Forces. Of course, we are far from alone in our criticism and are, in my opinion, far less harsh than some other reviews I’ve read.

On Monday, they escalated their response by sending me a nastygram threatening me with legal action unless I remove “false and misleading” comments from this website.

Whalen wasn’t available for comment because he’s apparently removing any reference to the Bible being the Literal Word of God or Jesus Christ being a Historical Person in an effort to remove false and misleading comments from his website.**

(h/t, as is often the case, to the incomparable J-Walk)

* Since Kirk Cameron is now saved from his former life of destitute pseudo-atheism by the Loving Grace of Almighty God, Kirk Cameron is no longer inherently flawed… he’s just a jackass.

** Uh, not really, I didn’t try to get ahold of Mr. Whalen. But thankfully we can perpetuate the lies of the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, Biblical Inerrancy, Etc., Etc., as it’s popular in American culture to just make shit up.

(Note: Left Behind Games ran a comment ad on Outchurched earlier this year. We like to acknowledge our supporters, even if they never did pay our invoice for the advertising. [For what it’s worth, Jesus didn’t pay us either, so it definitely can’t be said that Left Behind Games doesn’t closely follow in the freeloading footsteps of the Lord Jesus Christ.])

The threatened lawsuit is about misleading and false information being spread about the game (e.g. the rumors that the game promotes killing non-believers), not just about negative reviews. This is no different than some other company fighting to protect its reputation and products from damaging lies. For example, a food company has every right to go after people falsely claiming that the company’s products are contaminated or deliberately poisoned.
