The Plastic Jesus: Is It I-Doll-Atry?

by: Rev. Dan

KPHO Phoenix (a CBS affiliate):

Controversy is swirling over a foot-long, talking Jesus doll that Wal-Mart has put up for sale at more than 400 of its stores in at least 20 states, including some in the Valley.

It’s the first time the world’s largest retailer has carried a full line of religious toys.

The battery-powered, button-activated doll is able to recite a handful of different bible verses and the story of Jesus feeding the multitudes with five loaves and two fish. It also comes with a booklet giving parents tips on how to shape a child’s faith.

Not everyone is lining up to shell out $14.97 for the made-in-China plaything.

While nobody else wants one, I sure do! How cool would it be to replace the talky part and replace it with a homebrew chip, or even a chip from another doll?

Picture it: a Jesus doll with a Jerry Seinfeld voice chip.

What’s up with GrapeNuts? Are they grapes… or are they nuts?

And that, friends, is the proverbial tip of the creativity iceberg.

Think of what would happen if you kid dressed up Jesus in Barbie’s clothes! Jesus rides My Little Pony?

I’m certain, though, that if your kid had any Teletubbies dolls that Jesus would definitely steer clear of ‘em since Tinky Winky is gay.

If any of this doll business sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Last year, the company who manufactures this talking monstrosity (overpriced at any price) tried to donate a bunch of Jesus Dolls to the Marines’ Toys for Tots program.

I had a Jesus doll once. Of course, my age was still a single digit at the time; and I didn’t really care. ;)
