Hymns and Acronymns: How we’re using words and language to express the Outchurched experience.
- church or “lower-case ‘c’ church”
- The human organization comprised of folks who are active in and participate in the activities of a Denomination. (The buildings and the people who use them, regardless of doctrine/theology.) A purely human organization.
- Church or “upper-case ‘c’ church”
- The cumulative “Body of Christ” which includes all Believers throughout history (past, present, future). A purely Spiritual organization. Overlaps with the lower-c church.

- Southern Baptist Convention
- inchurched
- A category of people who are active in a church. The demographic
- unchurched
- A category of people who aren’t or have never been active in a church. This term is often used to signify people who may be targets of evangelism.
- postchurched
- A category of people who used to be active in a church but are currently inactive.
- outchurched
- A category of people who are basically inchurched and contempating/actively leaving the church (human organization)
